6 Ways to Travel Wine Country on a Budget

Georgia offers the best value on earth

In Kakheti and Telavi, a full day of wine tasting, a home-cooked meal, and a guesthouse can cost under $35. Georgia invented wine 8,000 years ago and has barely been discovered by tourists.

Eastern Europe is 3× cheaper than the west

Hungary's Tokaj produces some of the world's greatest sweet wines for a fraction of what you'd pay in Sauternes. Romania's Dealu Mare has great reds at local prices.

Free tastings are common in off-beat regions

Georgia, Hungary, much of Romania, and many Spanish cooperatives charge nothing for tastings. The more obscure the region, the more generous the welcome.

Visit in shoulder season for extra savings

Most budget regions get even cheaper in spring or autumn. A May visit to Croatia or a November visit to Greece means lower accommodation and zero queues.

Stay in guesthouses (not hotels)

In Georgia and Romania, family-run guesthouses (B&Bs) typically include dinner, wine, and breakfast. You'll meet the winemaker over the meal — this is the real experience.

Rent a car; skip tour operators

In budget regions, renting a small car and self-guiding costs less than joining a tour group and gives you access to smaller producers that tour buses never visit.
