Wine Country Visa Guide

Entry requirements for the world's top wine destinations. Tourist visa durations, Schengen rules, electronic travel authorizations, and practical tips.

Last updated: March 2026

Before You Book

Most popular wine destinations are in countries with generous visa-free arrangements for Western travelers. But there are important nuances:

  • The Schengen 90/180 rule applies across all Schengen countries combined. If you spend 60 days in France visiting Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Champagne, you have only 30 days left for Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, and the rest of the Schengen zone in that 180-day window.
  • Electronic travel authorizations (ESTA, eTA, ETA, NZeTA) are not visas, but you must have them before boarding. Apply at least 72 hours before departure.
  • Passport validity requirements vary. Many countries require 6 months validity beyond your planned departure date. South Africa requires 30 days plus two blank pages.
  • Multi-country wine trips across Schengen are seamless — no border checks between France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, and Austria. But Schengen entry/exit is tracked, so stay within your 90-day allocation.

Understanding the Schengen 90/180 Rule

The Schengen Area includes 29 European countries. As a non-EU tourist, you can stay for a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day rolling window. This is cumulative across all Schengen countries — days spent in France count toward your total, even if you then cross into Italy or Spain.

For wine travelers planning extended European tours (e.g., Bordeaux → Tuscany → Rioja → Douro), calculate your total Schengen days carefully. Use a Schengen calculator tool online to track your remaining allowance.

Tips for Multi-Country Wine Trips

  • If your trip exceeds 90 Schengen days, consider splitting it with time in non-Schengen wine countries like the UK, Georgia, or Croatia (though Croatia joined Schengen in 2023).
  • South America offers excellent wine travel (Argentina, Chile) with separate visa-free allowances — a good "reset" option between Schengen stays.
  • Keep printed copies of your entry/exit stamps and flight itineraries in case border officials question your Schengen day count.
