6 Tips for First-Time Wine Travellers

Start with free tastings

Many regions — Alsace, Loire Valley, and all of Australia — offer walk-in tastings at no charge. Ask the winery; you won't be turned away.

Don't worry about spitting

Spitting is professional and expected. But as a first-timer, nobody will judge you for swallowing. Just pace yourself across multiple wineries.

Book one guided tour first

A single half-day group tour orients you to the region, vocabulary, and what questions to ask. After that, self-guided visits feel much easier.

Start with single-grape regions

Regions famous for one grape — Marlborough (Sauvignon Blanc), Barossa (Shiraz), Burgundy (Pinot Noir) — are easier to understand than regions with 10+ varieties.

Visit 2–3 wineries per day max

Palate fatigue is real. Two or three focused visits beat six rushed ones. Most first-timers regret doing too many in a single day.

Price doesn't equal quality

A $20 bottle from a small producer you met in person often beats a $80 bottle at retail. The story and the setting change how wine tastes.
