Started in Porto — walked across the Dom Luís I bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia. Visited Taylor's and Graham's port cellars (€15-20pp each). The 20-year tawnies were extraordinary. Dinner at a tiny tasca in Ribeira for €18 total including wine.

Day 2
Train to Pinhão
Took the Douro line train from Porto to Pinhão — widely called the most beautiful train ride in Portugal, and it delivers. Three hours of river gorges, terraced hillsides, and tiny villages. Checked into our guesthouse overlooking the river (€65/night).

Day 3
Quintas Along the River
Walked to three quintas within 3km of Pinhão. Quinta do Bomfim (free tasting with Symington estate tour, stunning views). Two smaller producers we found by following hand-painted signs. Total tasting spend: €15. Packed lunch eaten on a terrace overlooking the river.

Day 4
Boat Cruise & Wine Villages
Morning rabelo boat cruise on the Douro (€20pp, 1 hour). Afternoon bus to São João da Pesqueira — the viewpoint at São Salvador do Mundo is the most dramatic I've ever seen. Dinner at the local municipal restaurant: three courses with wine for €10.

Cooking Class & Village Life
Booked a cooking class at a quinta (€45pp including lunch and wine). Made bacalhau à brás and pastel de nata. Spent the afternoon reading on our guesthouse terrace. Sometimes the best travel days are the slowest.

Côa Valley Rock Art
Day trip to the Côa Valley Archaeological Park — UNESCO World Heritage Palaeolithic rock art (€10pp). Completely different from wine tourism but fascinating. Tasted at Quinta do Vale Meão on the way back (serious, age-worthy reds).

What We'd Do Differently
Would have booked one night at a quinta hotel (around €100-120) for the full estate experience. Also, bring cash — several small producers only accept it. And learn 10 Portuguese phrases; the locals light up when you try.
Our Advice
The Douro is one of Europe's best budget wine destinations. Skip Airbnb and book guesthouses directly — they're cheaper and the owners often invite you for port on the terrace. The train from Porto is cheap, scenic, and runs daily.
