Day 1

Stellenbosch Town & First Tastings

Flew into Cape Town and drove to Stellenbosch (45 mins). Walked the oak-lined streets of the oldest university town in South Africa. First tastings at Delaire Graff (the view alone is worth the visit) and Jordan (excellent Chardonnay). Dinner at Overture — one of the best restaurant experiences any of us has ever had, at a fraction of European prices.

Day 2

Stellenbosch Wine Route

Hired a driver (R1500 for the day, split four ways). Visited Kanonkop (benchmark Pinotage), Rustenberg (historic estate, incredible Cabernet), and Waterford (the Chocolate & Wine pairing is genius — dark chocolate with Cabernet Franc). Every estate felt generous — large pours, knowledgeable staff, no pretension.

Day 3

Franschhoek — The Culinary Capital

Drove to Franschhoek (20 mins). Took the Franschhoek Wine Tram — a hop-on-hop-off tram and open-air bus that loops through 8 estates (R280pp). No designated driver needed. La Motte was our favourite: refined Syrah, a small museum, and a farm shop selling their own preserves. Evening strolling Franschhoek's restaurant-lined main street.

Day 4

Swartland Side Trip

Ventured to the Swartland (1 hour north) — South Africa's most exciting emerging region. Visited Mullineux (best Chenin Blanc we've ever had), then Sadie Family Wines. The landscape is completely different from Stellenbosch — dry, wheat-coloured, with ancient bush vines. Fewer tourists, more raw energy. Evening at a Stellenbosch wine bar comparing our purchases.

Day 5

Table Mountain & Cape Town

Final day in Cape Town. Cable car up Table Mountain for the best view in southern Africa. Lunch at the V&A Waterfront, then wine shopping at Caroline's Fine Wine Cellar (the best wine shop in Cape Town). Loaded our suitcases with bottles — the value compared to home prices makes it irresistible.

What We'd Do Differently

Would have added a day in Constantia (closer to Cape Town, historic sweet wines) and spent a night in Franschhoek instead of commuting. Also, book the Wine Tram online at least a week ahead — it sells out, especially the afternoon routes.

Our Advice

South Africa is the world's best-value wine destination right now. The wines are world-class, the food is extraordinary, and your money goes 3-4x further than in Europe or California. Hire a driver or use the Wine Tram — DUI enforcement is strict and distances add up. March (autumn) is perfect: warm, dry, post-harvest calm.
