Best Villány Wineries to Visit in 2026 — 6 Verified Picks

Villány sits at the southernmost tip of Hungary and is best known for red wine. The Gere winery's own regional overview traces viticulture here back to Roman times, says German-speaking Swabian settlers in the 18th century reshaped both vineyards and winemaking, and credits them with the famous rows of cellars built into the village. After the communist era ended in the early 1990s, family businesses were re-established, and the region today has around 2,500 hectares of vineyards across the hills around Villány and Siklós. The signature wine is Villányi Franc, the name used for premium and super-premium Cabernet Franc from the region. The same source describes the climate as continental with a submediterranean influence, warm and dry with long sunshine hours, and the soil as mainly loess and red clay over a limestone bed, with unusually strong geothermal heat. Most of the estates below are in or beside Villány itself, one has its main base on the Fekete-hegy hill above Kisharsány, and one runs its cellars in the neighbouring village of Villánykövesd.

Frequently asked

What is Villányi Franc?

It is the name used for the premium and super-premium Cabernet Franc wines of Villány. The Gere winery's own regional overview says that while Cabernet Franc is grown worldwide and is mostly used as a blending partner, bottled as a single variety in Villány it reaches its peak, and it describes these wines as elegant, complex and well structured with fresh acidity and velvety tannins.

Do Villány wineries require reservations?

Mostly yes. Sauska says its regular tastings (Wednesday to Sunday) need a prior reservation and other days are by appointment only. Vylyan says its tasting packages are booked in advance. Gere runs daily tastings that you reserve through its wine bar, and its Saturday cellar tasting is a set session. Bock publishes fixed cellar-tour times. Polgár and Tiffán handle visits by contacting them first, and Tiffán asks you to pre-order food. Contact ahead whichever you choose.

Which Villány wineries publish a tasting price?

Of the six here, two do on their own sites. Gere lists three six-wine tasting sets at 9,000, 15,000 and 50,000 HUF per person, plus a vineyard tour by vintage bus. Bock lists a cellar tour with two wines at 2,000 HUF per person on its cellar page. Sauska, Vylyan, Polgár and Tiffán describe their formats without a standing price on the pages we read, so check their sites for current rates.

Do I need a car to visit these wineries?

Gere, Sauska, Bock and Polgár all list Villány locations, so they can be combined in one day with short taxi hops. Vylyan's estate centre is on the Fekete-hegy hill at Kisharsány, and Tiffán's cellars are in Villánykövesd, so those two need a car, taxi or booked driver. If you want to taste at more than one estate in a day, arrange a designated driver.

Can I stay at the winery?

Two of the six run their own hotels. Polgár runs the Polgár Elixír Hotel in the village, and Bock runs a hotel alongside its cellar, with the Óbor restaurant beside it. Gere has its own hotel and restaurant brand as well. Vylyan's site has an accommodation section too. Check each winery's site for current room options and offers.
