Marathon du Medoc 2026
The world's most festive marathon, winding through Pauillac, Saint-Julien, and Margaux vineyards. Runners in costume pass 23 wine tasting stations and enjoy oysters, steak, and cheese en route.
The Marathon du Medoc is not a race you run to set a personal best. It is a 42.195-kilometre tour through some of the world's most expensive vineyard real estate, with 23 wine tasting stations, oyster bars, steak frites, cheese platters, and live bands positioned along the route. Over 8,000 runners — most in elaborate costumes — wind through the appellations of Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estephe, and Margaux in what is routinely called the world's most festive marathon.
The Course
The race starts and finishes in Pauillac, home to three of Bordeaux's five First Growth chateaux. The route passes through the vineyards of Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Latour, and Chateau Margaux. The tasting stations are hosted by local chateaux and cooperatives, each pouring their wines alongside a food pairing — oysters at one station, entrecote steak at another, cheese and charcuterie at the next.
The average finishing time is around 5 hours 30 minutes, roughly twice the pace of a competitive marathon. The generous time limit (6 hours 30 minutes) reflects the festival's priorities: finish, but enjoy the journey.
Who Should Run
You do not need to be an elite runner. You do need to be fit enough to cover 42km at a walk-jog pace. Many participants walk significant sections, particularly through the tasting stations in the second half. The heat (September in Bordeaux can reach 30 degrees) is the main physical challenge, not the pace.
Costumes are mandatory in spirit if not in regulation. Each year has a theme — previous themes have included superheroes, film characters, and world cultures. Groups often coordinate elaborate matching costumes. Running in costume adds to the challenge but is absolutely part of the experience.
Registration
Entries open in January and sell out within days. The EUR 85-100 entry fee includes your race number, a costume contest entry, and — crucially — all the wine and food along the route. Registration is via the official marathon website and operates on a first-come basis. There is no lottery system.
Getting There
Pauillac is 50km north of Bordeaux on the D2 wine road. On race day, shuttle buses run from Bordeaux city centre to the start line. Many runners stay in Bordeaux and take the shuttle, though Pauillac and the Medoc villages have limited accommodation for those who want to be closer.
Insider Tips
Train for the distance but do not expect to race it. The first 15km pass quickly; the challenge is the final 10km when fatigue, heat, and accumulated wine combine. Eat at every food station — the calories genuinely help. Wear a costume that will survive sweat and wine splashes. Bring a phone in a waterproof pouch for photos. The finish line party in Pauillac continues until midnight.
