Napa Valley Auction 2026
The premier Napa Valley charity wine auction weekend. Exclusive vintner-hosted dinners, barrel tastings, and the landmark live auction at Meadowood. Proceeds fund local nonprofits.
Auction Napa Valley is the American wine world's marquee charity event, organised annually by the Napa Valley Vintners association. Over four days in early June, the valley's most celebrated winemakers open their estates for exclusive dinners, barrel tastings, and behind-the-scenes experiences, culminating in the live auction — a spectacular, high-energy event where unique wine lots sell for tens of thousands of dollars.
The Weekend Structure
The auction weekend follows a well-established format. Thursday evening kicks off with a barrel tasting at a participating winery, where the current unreleased vintage is poured alongside library selections. Friday features vintner-hosted dinners: small, intimate gatherings at private estates where a single winemaker cooks (or has a top chef cook) for a table of 20-30 guests. These dinners are the highlight for many attendees — the intimacy, the setting, and the wines served are difficult to replicate elsewhere.
Saturday is the main event: the live auction. Held at Meadowood Napa Valley, the auction unfolds under a massive tent on the resort's croquet lawn. The lots are curated by the vintners themselves and often include experiences money cannot normally buy: private blending sessions, vineyard-designate magnums, multi-year allocations from cult producers, and wine country vacations.
Sunday wraps with a more relaxed brunch and tasting event.
Who Attends
Auction Napa Valley is not a public event in the usual sense. Tickets start at around USD 3,500 per person for the weekend package, and the audience skews toward high-net-worth collectors, wine industry professionals, and philanthropists. The atmosphere is convivial rather than stuffy — Hawaiian shirts and jeans are as common as blazers — but the price point means this is a self-selecting crowd.
Since its founding in 1981, the auction has raised over USD 230 million for local health and education nonprofits. The charitable mission is genuine and central to the event's identity.
What the Auction Lots Look Like
A typical auction features 30-50 lots. Some examples from recent years: a vertical of every vintage of Screaming Eagle from 1992 to the present, a custom-blended barrel of Opus One created by the buyer alongside the winemaking team, a week-long wine country experience including helicopter tours and private estate visits, and a 10-year allocation of a cult Cabernet at release pricing.
Bidding is fast and often spirited. Lots regularly sell for USD 50,000 to USD 500,000, with the occasional record-breaker exceeding USD 1 million. The energy in the tent during competitive bidding is electric.
Where to Stay
Auction weekend is the busiest weekend of the year in Napa Valley. Hotels along Highway 29 and the Silverado Trail fill up months in advance. Meadowood, Auberge du Soleil, and the Carneros Resort are the premium options and double as hubs for auction-adjacent events. More affordable options can be found in the city of Napa itself and in Sonoma County, a 30-minute drive west.
Getting There
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Oakland International Airport (OAK) are both roughly 90 minutes from the valley. Sacramento Airport is about the same distance from the northern end. A rental car is essential — the valley is 30 miles long and public transport between wineries is limited.
Insider Tips
The vintner-hosted dinners on Friday are, by consensus, the single best part of the weekend. They sell out within minutes of the programme being announced. If you secure a ticket, sign up for dinner assignments as early as possible and express preferences for smaller, less well-known estates — the experience tends to be more personal and the wines more surprising.
Even if you cannot attend the main auction, many Napa wineries run their own open-door events during auction weekend. The valley is in a celebratory mood, and cellar doors are pouring their best wines.
