Which kind of tour suits you
Small group tour
Suits: You are staying in Florence and want the cellars, the transport and a lunch arranged in one booking.
Check: Check the pickup point, the group size and which estates and towns are on the route.
Private tour
Suits: You want to pick the estates, combine Chianti with Siena or San Gimignano, or reach Montalcino and Montepulciano in a day.
Check: Compare the length and what is included. Visit Tuscany says Montalcino and Montepulciano are best reached by car, so a private driver is the no-car way there.
Bus and a booked estate visit
Suits: You want a cheap, slow day around Greve in Chianti and are happy to plan around timetables.
Check: Book the estate first and check the bus timetable on the operator site.

Where the day trips go
- Chianti Classico, in the hills between Florence and Siena. Castello di Verrazzano, in the Greve in Chianti area, lists guided tours of its cellar.
- Some tours combine Chianti with San Gimignano or Siena in one day.
- Montalcino and Montepulciano, south of Florence, make a longer day. Each has its own producers’ consortium site.

Getting to Chianti and Siena without a car
- You can reach Greve in Chianti by bus from Florence’s main bus station, which is next door to the train station.
- Siena can be reached by train and by bus, but the train station is about 3 km from the historic centre.
- Visit Tuscany says the best way to see Montalcino and Montepulciano is by car, which is where a tour earns its place.
- Bus timetables are on the Autolinee Toscane site.

When to go
- The Chianti Classico harvest runs between the first half of September and the second half of October, depending on where and how high the vineyards are.
