Hirsch Vineyards

Sonoma County, United States

About

David Hirsch planted vines on a cliff-edge ridge above the Pacific near Cazadero in 1980, long before the Sonoma Coast was considered a serious wine region. His daughter Jasmine now manages the 40-acre estate and has become one of California's leading voices on coastal terroir and sustainable viticulture. The wines are estate-only, made with zero herbicides or pesticides since 1992, hand-harvested from steep, wind-battered slopes. The Pinot Noir is among California's most recognisably site-specific: foggy, salty, with a tension and minerality that reads as distinctly Sonoma Coast rather than generically Californian.

Why It's a Hidden Gem

One of the original Sonoma Coast pioneers, planted before the appellation existed. The vines on these cliff-edge slopes have 40+ years of root depth — the resulting wines have a complexity and site identity that newer coastal estates will take decades to match.
