Peay Vineyards
WTG PickAbout
One of California's most isolated vineyards, Peay sits at the edge of the Sonoma Coast on a remote ridge above the Pacific fog line near Annapolis. Nick and Andy Peay planted this 51-acre estate in the late 1990s against conventional advice — the site was considered too cool, too remote, too difficult. The resulting Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are among California's most distinctive: nervy, restrained, high-acid, with a salinity from the ocean air that no Napa or inland Sonoma wine can replicate. Winemaker Vanessa Wong has refined the style further since joining in 2003. Allocations go largely to a mailing list; the winery does not have a formal tasting room.
Why It's a Hidden Gem
A 2-hour drive from San Francisco on winding roads with no signage — but the wines justify the pilgrimage. One of the few California producers whose Pinot Noir is consistently compared to top Burgundy in blind tastings.
