Teran and Truffle Festival — Motovun

Every October, the hilltop medieval town of Motovun in Istria celebrates two of the world's great luxury ingredients together: Teran red wine and white truffles. The festival combines guided truffle hunts in the Motovun Forest (the world's densest white truffle habitat), competitive winemaker tastings, and a 11km recreational hike through the vine-covered Istrian hills. A uniquely Istrian experience that no other wine region can replicate.

Book the early-morning truffle hunt (6am start) — groups are small (6 people max) and you join a handler and truffle dog in the forest. The truffles shaved over Istrian pasta with a glass of Teran is one of the great food-wine pairings.

Pelješac Open Cellar Days

Rent a car — Pelješac is a long narrow peninsula with no practical public transport. The Dingač vineyards face south at 45-degree angles above the sea; walk down to the Dingač village overlook for the most dramatic vineyard view in Croatia.

Istria Wine Run

The walk option passes smaller family producers making exceptional natural Malvazija—seek out Kabola and Velenosi at the stations; their orange wines aren't widely exported. Book a private cellar visit to a Teran producer in Raša beforehand to understand this local red's mineral, tannic character that's impossible to appreciate in passing.
