Domaine Richaud

WTG Pick
Rhône Valley, France

About

Marcel Richaud almost single-handedly elevated Cairanne from an anonymous Côtes du Rhône village to a standalone appellation (achieved in 2016) through decades of meticulous work. Marcel passed away in 2018 but his children continue the estate with the same biodynamic rigour: Grenache, Carignan, and Counoise from some of Cairanne's oldest vines, harvested late, fermented with native yeasts. The wines remain some of the southern Rhône's best-value serious bottles.

Why It's a Hidden Gem

The man who made Cairanne an appellation. His wines punch well above their price point — Grenache that competes with much more expensive Châteauneuf.
