Visiting Wineries

Mosel growers are welcoming and the villages are tiny — many Weingüter offer walk-in tasting (Weinprobe), but booking ahead is wise for smaller estates and during the autumn harvest. Riesling festivals run along the valley in late summer.

Insider tip: Piesport sits in a dramatic loop of the Mosel, beneath some of the steepest slate vineyards in the world — the Goldtröpfchen amphitheatre. This is Riesling in its purest, most filigree form: low in alcohol, racing with acidity, from bone-dry to lusciously sweet. The cool climate means a late October harvest. Time a visit for autumn colour on the slopes, or summer for river walks and boat trips.
