Stay on a wine farm if you want to taste without driving back at the end of the day. Stay in Cape Town if the city is half the trip. Stellenbosch is the closest wine town to the airport, about 35 minutes, and about 30 minutes from both Franschhoek and Paarl, so it suits a short trip. Franschhoek is about 55 minutes from the airport and suits a longer one.
Which base: Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek or Paarl

| Stellenbosch: 35 | Cape Town 45 · Franschhoek 30 · Paarl 30 |

How long are you staying?
Two nights or fewer: pick one base. Of the three wine towns, Stellenbosch has the shortest drive from the airport and is 30 minutes from the other two.
Three to five nights: split the stay between two bases, for example Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, 30 minutes apart.
City first: from Cape Town the wine towns are 45 to 55 minutes each way, so a day of tasting means a long drive back. A farm stay removes that drive.
