Which kind of tour suits you

Organised day tour from Porto

Suits: You want one booking that covers the transport, the estate visits and the way back.

Check: Check the pickup point, the return time and how many people share the vehicle on the booking page.

Private driver and guide

Suits: You want to choose the estates, stop for the views you like and eat when you are hungry.

Check: Ask what the day includes (tastings, lunch, a boat) before you compare lengths.

Train and a booked estate visit

Suits: You would rather watch the river from a train window and spend your time at one estate.

Check: Book the estate first: Quinta do Crasto says visits are by prior appointment, and the stop for it is Ferrão station.

How the day works

  • You leave Porto and head up the river. The Douro line runs from Porto to Pocinho, so the railway and the valley run the same way.
  • The valley is split into wine sub-regions: Baixo Corgo from Barqueiros to Régua, and Cima Corgo from Régua to Tua.
  • An estate visit takes the middle of the day. Quinta do Crasto lists a 90-minute guided tour and tasting, and a lunch visit of about 3 hours.
  • The river is an option: boats run from Pinhão or Folgosa towards Quinta do Crasto.

Doing it from Porto without a car

  • The Douro railway line connects Porto to Pocinho, and the train stops at Régua and Pinhão.
  • Get off at Ferrão station for Quinta do Crasto.
  • Comboios de Portugal also runs the Douro Historical Train as a tourist service.
  • Porto or the valley as your base: the MiraDouro train runs daily in both directions from Porto São Bento to Régua, Pinhão and Pocinho, so a Porto stay works for the train. To sleep among the vines, Quinta da Pacheca and Quinta do Tedo both list accommodation.

When to go

  • Late summer is harvest time. Quinta Nova runs its wine harvest activity once a year between August and September, with a tasting and a regional harvest lunch. Estates set their own dates, so ask before you book.

Estates with their own visit pages

  • Quinta do Crasto: Explains how to arrive by car, train or boat, and that every visit is by prior appointment.
  • Quinta da Pacheca: Lists vineyard tours, tastings and Douro river cruises, and has a hotel on the estate.
  • Quinta Nova: Runs a yearly harvest activity with tasting and lunch.
  • Quinta do Tedo: In the heart of the Douro valley; lists tours and tastings and accommodation.
